For me it’s a tradition dating back to 2019 to drink The Last Word as my election cocktail.
It’s an unnaturally delicate, pale, luminous green, with shards of ice and a light foam from the shaker, and the taste is fresh and clean and a little sweet and sour, with lots of botanicals and quite a bit going on in a quiet way. There’s a hidden power there, as if something tremendous is concealed within. (Something is: green chartreuse.)
The only thing it has in common with UK elections is that it can bring on feelings of shame and gloom if you swallow too much of it.
The Last Word cocktail
1 part strong, smooth dry gin (I don’t think this is the place for anything with funky botanicals; I typically use Fords Gin Officers’ Reserve (54.5% ABV), which is strong, smooth from oak ageing and botanically orthodox; I think it may have been recommended by someone for the Last Word)
1 part green chartreuse (55% ABV)
1 part maraschino liqueur (e.g. Luxardo, 32% ABV)
1 part fresh lime
It’s usual to use 3/4 of an ounce per ingredient per cocktail. Shake with crushed ice and strain into a (preferably chilled) coupe.
Drinking notes
Drink without accompaniment; it doesn’t suit food; it suits nighttime; it makes a good final drink.
